"Chinatown through the Lens" is an initiative that honors Edmonton’s Chinatown through a photography competition. Winning entries will be featured in an exhibition, showcasing artistic interpretations of this culturally rich neighborhood. We also invite the community to contribute old photographs of Chinatown, allowing us to weave a narrative that celebrates both its rich history and vibrant present, fostering a deeper appreciation of the cultural heritage within Chinatown.

我們誠摯邀請您參加「鏡頭下的唐人街」攝影比賽,展示您的獨特視角,藉由多樣的攝影主題表達創意,通過展現華人社區的故事和經歷,促進更深刻的文化理解與欣賞。

參賽者可以參考以下主題提交照片:

  • 風景與地標: 捕捉唐人街的標誌性建築、歷史遺跡和變化中的街景。
  • 節慶與慶祝活動: 展示充滿活力的文化傳統、社區聚會和活躍該區的娛樂活動。
  • 唐人街的日常: 記錄唐人街的日常節奏。
  • 唐人街的人們: 通過攝影展示肖像和故事,慶祝塑造唐人街的個人和社區。

要求與規則

資格:

  • 開放給所有人,無論技能水平如何。參賽者年齡在18歲以下者必須有家長同意。
  • 提交限制: 每位參賽者最多可以提交兩張照片,但每位參賽者僅可獲獎一張照片。

格式:

  • 圖像大小:
    • 最小尺寸:最短邊1500像素。
    • 推薦尺寸:最長邊3000像素。
  • 解析度: 最低300 DPI。
  • 文件格式: 首選JPEG格式。

照片要求:

About the Photo Competition

Join us in celebrating the vibrant cultural heritage of Edmonton’s Chinatown through the "Chinatown through the Lens" Photo Competition! Let’s express your unique perspectives through various photographic themes. Together, we will create a collective visual narrative that honors the historical significance and everyday life within Chinatown.

Participants are encouraged to submit photographs inspired by the following themes:

  • Landscapes & Landmarks: Capture the iconic architecture, historic sites, and evolving streetscapes of Chinatown.
  • Festivals & Celebrations: Showcase vibrant cultural traditions, community gatherings, and entertaining events that enliven the area.
  • Chinatown in Motion: Document the everyday rhythm of Chinatown.
  • People of Chinatown: Present portraits and storytelling through photography that celebrates the individuals and communities shaping Chinatown.

Requirements & Guidelines

Eligibility:

  • Open to all individuals, regardless of skill level. Participants under 18 must have parental consent.
  • Submission Limit: Each participant can submit up to two photographs, but only one photograph can be awarded in the competition.

Format:

  • Image Size:
    • Minimum dimensions: 1500 pixels on the shortest side.
    • Recommended dimensions: 3000 pixels on the longest side.
  • Resolution: Minimum 300 DPI.
  • File Format: JPEG preferred.

Photo Requirement:

  • All submitted photographs must be taken within the Chinatown study area boundary (including Chinatown North, Cultural Chinatown South, and the Chinese Garden). See this map

Rules:

  • Any low-resolution images will not be considered.
  • AI-generated images will not be accepted.
  • Entries will be disqualified if they have been heavily manipulated. Adjustments for color balance and cropping are acceptable.
  • Any promotion of your entries (or any promotion of your entries by other people or groups on your behalf) is not allowed.
  • The Edmonton Chinatown Multicultural Centre (ECMCC) reserves the right to disqualify any image deemed inappropriate or offensive in any way.

Ownership:

  • The photographer must declare that the photograph(s) submitted are original works and that they have the right to authorize the use and publication of the photograph(s).

Submission Process:

Accompanying Information:

Each submission must include:

  • Title of the photograph
  • Brief description (max. 50 words) explaining the context and significance of the image.

Judging Criteria

A panel of judges, including representatives from local photography clubs, the Edmonton Chinatown Multicultural Centre Board, and community leaders, will evaluate submissions based on the following criteria listed in order of importance:

  1. Creativity and originality
  2. Adherence to competition objectives (capturing the essence of Chinatown and its cultural vibrancy)
  3. Technical execution (composition, lighting, etc.)
  4. Emotional impact and storytelling

Prizes

Awards will be presented, with prizes including:

  • Champion: $500 cash prize and trophy
  • 1st Runner-up: $400 cash prize and trophy
  • 2nd Runner-up: $300 cash prize and trophy
  • 5 Merit Awards: $100 cash prize and certificates
  • Random Draw: All eligible submissions received will be entered into a random draw for a $20.00 T&T cash coupon, with 10 winners awarded.
  • All awarded photos will be recognized in a photography exhibition.
